Title: Selected child factors moderating the impact of maternal absence on children's behavior and development
Abstract: Research regarding how selected child factors might moderate the impact of maternal absence on the behavior and development of children are reviewed. These child factors include: [1] characteristics within the child such as age, sex, genetic factors, and temperamental style, [2] personal resources such as the child's cognitive abilities [e.g., intelligence, scholastic achievement, cognitive appraisal capacities, problem solving and coping skills], self‐esteem and self‐efficacy, [3] personal social supports including the remaining father, siblings, other relatives and adults, peers, and the latchkey phenomenon, [4] more formal social supports including institutions and adoption, foster care, day care, schools, and hospitals, [5] experiences including a multiplicity of concurrent and alternating stressors, and [6] past experiences including parent‐child relationships, task accomplishment, and preparatory programs.
