Title: The formation of glycine and serine: Calculation of certain reaction rates in the rat
Abstract: The mathematical theory necessary for the calculation of the rates of synthesis and interconversion of serine and glycine in the rat has been developed. Values for these rates calculated from published data are: net conversion of serine into glycine in the absence of dietary glycine and serine, 1; synthesis of glycine from precursors other than serine, 1; synthesis of serine from precursors other than glycine, 2; gross conversion of serine into glycine, 6; gross conversion of glycine into serine, 5 mmole/100 g. body weight/day. The use of isotopic dilution as a measure of a rate of biosynthesis has been discussed.
