You take it up lightly, expecting to read the biography of an eminent man; you find yourself studying a concise political history of India-Pakistan in the first half of the twentieth century. The compres sion is masterly and the style of writing smooth—like the Amtrak train gliding at 100 miles an hour and you arrive at Los Angeles just after you have left San Francisco, so it seems. Wolpert has been fascinated by Jinnah and been collecting material for the present book for fifteen years. The bibliography is impressive; the author must have waded through an ocean of works. Apart from the authorised biography by Hector Bolitho there are numerous books (not to mention books In Urdu) on the Qaid-i-Azam. It must have taken a stout heart to add to the number.Read More
