Title: The development of organelles in embryos of Fraxinus americana
Abstract: The capacity of the dormant embryos in seeds of Fraxinus americana to develop enzyme activity in glyoxysomes increased during incubation at 22 °C in the dark. The investigations on the behaviour of the glyoxysomes and mitochondria in incubated ash embryos during stratification demonstrated a jump in catalase and isocitrate lyase activity in the glyoxysomes and in fumarase activity in the mitochondria before the embryos are able to germinate. A second increase in activity of these enzymes occurred after germination. The development of catalase, isocitrate lyase and fumarase in the organelles can be regulated by abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid A3 (GA3) and zeatin in germinating and nongerminating embryos.
