Abstract: The first part of R. R. Jordan's book contains a survey of a range of 20th century British writers who have spent some time teaching abroad. The second part covers the literary achievements of some members of British Council Staff. Bob Jordan himself is a former Council Officer who has worked in Nepal and Sierra Leone and is an expert in English for academic purposes The connection between British writers and their experience of ‘abroad’ is an important one.
