Title: Amplitude controlled array transducers for mode selection and beam steering of guided waves in plates
Abstract: We present a method for mode selection of guided wave modes and beam steering using purely amplitude variation across a one dimensional linear array of transducers. The method is distinct from apodization of phased array transducers that involves amplitude variation in addition to time delays and merely aims to improve the spectral characteristics of the transducer. The relationship between amplitude variation and the pitch of the array is derived by considering the resulting transduction as analogous to a spatio-temporal filter approach. It is also shown analytically and through numerical examples that the proposed method results in bidirectional guided waves when the steering angle is zero. Further, for non-zero steering angles, the waves travel in four directions, including the desired direction. Experimental studies are suggested.
