Abstract: This article focuses on economic reforms in Hungary. It gives an account of the repeated efforts made by the Hungarian Communist Party to find solutions to problems generated by the planned economy. The reform policy started in the late 1950s. By the end of the 1980s the reform efforts seemed to be exhausted and the socialist system of planned economy was abolished. The way was opened for the introduction of a market economy.
