Title: Global public relations in a post-communist world: A new model
Abstract: Public relations has played a role in the collapse of communism because it provided an effective means to communicate publicly across national boundaries. Thus the role of public relations today in world politics is more important than ever before. In fact, political ideology today, in light of communism's fall, seems less significant than effective communication. This article proposes that old ways of theorizing about media systems may be obsolete as a result. Old theories were often based on political ideologies. New theories, the author suggests, should more appropriately be based on pragmatic considerations: did the communication work? Was it effective? This pragmatic approach has characterized most American public relations from the beginning. A new “pragmatic” model might be the best way to look at global communication in the future. Ray Hiebert writes. He is a professor at the University of Maryland and editor of the Public Relations Review. He is also director of the new American Journalism Center in Budapest, Hungary.
