Abstract: The Teacher Authored Instruction Manager is a prototype Computer Managed Instruction (CMI) system developed at the University of Alberta. By using two computer programs to store detailed student information and curriculum data, TAIM produces individualised lessons for students and diagnostic information for teachers. The system allows both automatic and manual instructional sequences which, combined with access to data on student differences, provides a means for individualised instruction. The person responsible for instruction can create or modify Display, Test or Logic Units suppress student printouts, add displays or comments to the default lesson and manually re-set individual students the instructional paths. After being tried with six teachers and three classes of students the system was deemed effective in terms of teacher and student use. Further testing is needed to determine its viability within traditional instructional settings.
