Abstract: The tendency of an alloy to be subjected to brittle fracture depends greatly on the ratio of its resistance against plastic deformation to its resistance against fracture; the larger this ratio the less probable is the occurrence of brittle fracture. In view of experimental difficulties, notch sensitivity is used for evaluating these parameters. The tests indicated that Cr- Mn steels alloyed with strong carbide-forming elements have roughly the same tendency toward brittle fracture under stress concentration as Cr-Ni- Mo steels. The threshold value of Cr- Ni steels toward cold brittleness is at a relatively high temperature. As a result of testing a series of different steels. CrNi-Mn steels are recommended in the place of Cr-Ni-Mo steels for the fabrication of components of complicated machinery. This replacement would also result in saving Mo metal. (TTT)
