Title: American Indian and White Students Talking About Ethnic Identity in Teacher Education Programs: Helping Teacher Education Students Know Themselves as Cultural Beings
Abstract: Abstract Writing a cultural being paper assignment offers an effective teaching strategy for teacher education students. A cultural being paper also provides an opportunity for teacher educators to reflect upon themselves having cultural identities. The focus of this classroom assignment was to help teacher educators contrast how American Indian students and white European American students develop their ethnic identities in teacher education programs. The context and ideas that generated this self-study are described, and student excerpts are provided to illustrate the processes these students travel in their identity development. In essence, students moved from a state of unawareness to varying degrees of self-awareness. The study concludes with critique and suggestions for use of this assignment by teacher educators and interested others.
