Abstract: This paper is concerned with the behavious of one component of employee job search in one local labour market during a period of severe recession. The paper focuses on the relationship between market conditions and the number of employees using the services of Employment Offices and Jobcentres. In analysing this relationship over time the paper stresses the need to adopt a flow approach in such empirical studies of the labour market. Often, as in this case, explanatory variables can affect inflows and outflows to labour market stocks in different directions, and misleading conclusions may, therefore, be drawn if only the traditional stock analysis is conducted. A further concern of the paper is to examine whether the relationship between market conditions and job search differs between male and female employees.
