Title: A thermodynamic formalism based on the fundamental relation and the legendre transformation
Abstract: This paper describes a general formalism for the study of thermodynamic properties. The formalism is based on the concepts of the fundamental relation and the Legendre transformation. The important properties of the latter are developed. Examples from macroscopic and statistical thermodynamics are presented to show how the formalism is applied in order to recognize and establish, for a system, a fundamental relation whose representation depends on those properties that arise in the analysis. It is also shown that when limited data are available, an incomplete fundamental relation may be developed which yields all the thermodynamic information of the available data. The formalism is also useful for the reduction of partial derivatives.
