Title: Ophiolites of the Hengduan Mountains, China: characteristics and tectonic settings
Abstract: The Hengduan Mountains contain Neotethyan and Palaeotethyan ophiolites. Dengqen ophiolite is representative of Neotethyan ophiolite. Its extrusive series are typical fore-arc boninite and are considered to have formed in a fore-arc basin setting. It was emplaced at the end of the Jurassic. The Palaeotethyan ophiolite is widely distributed over the Hengduan Mountains. It is composed mainly of metamorphic periootite (mainly lherzolite), gabbro and basalt. Cumulative ultramafic rocks and sheeted dike complex are rarely exposed. Basalt in most of Palaeotethyan ophiolites have geochemical features similar to MORBs. Basalts in most associated sedimentological evidence, most of the Paleotethyan ophiolites (except Changning-Menglian ophiolite in big ocean basins) were formed in small ocean basins.
