Title: Publishing in Open-access Journals: Is There a Risk?
Abstract: I admit that when I started writing this I knew next to nothing about open-access journals and the peer-review and publication processes associated with them. I had read articles from some of the more popular journals, like PLOS ONE, but did not understand how publishing in open-access journals is different from traditional-format journals, except that the research is available online and freely accessible. So like any good scientist I did a little research and gathered some data. My review of open-access journals and their peerreview processes was far from exhaustive, but it identified three fundamental issues that highlight the possible benefits, and more importantly, the potential risks of publishing in this format.
