Abstract: The paper describes research involving the design and implementation of a patient management advisory system in post-operative care, which aims to provide supported advice and explanation in answer to user queries in both diagnostic and therapeutic contexts. A major theme of the research is that having an explanation-based rationale which guides the architectural design of the computer based expert system will result in greater user acceptance and understanding, increased learning and improved decision-making skills. The purpose of such a system is to support users in making their decisions rather than delivering for them prescriptive conclusions. Of particular interest is the way the program employs qualitative causal reasoning of pathophysiological systems to justify its suggestions and recommendations.
