Title: Peer Pals: Supporting Positive Social-Emotional Behaviors in a Kindergarten Classroom
Abstract: This case study of a kindergarten classroom explores the importance of engaging students in building a caring and supportive learning culture. In a global education environment increasingly dominated by standardized evaluation, goals for nurturing social, emotional, physical, and intellectual development through education are gradually being replaced by cognitive development and attainment of basic academic skills. The article considers the value of positive peer interaction as “peer pals” to develop reciprocal relationships and communication skills that lead to empathy and better understanding and appreciation for diversity. The study emphasizes the profound impact that positive social interactions have on children's minds and behavior during the early years of elementary education, which are formative years for their social and intellectual development.
