Title: Analysis of plane-strain rotational compression using the upper-bound method
Abstract: A simple kinematically admissible velocity field is proposed for the plane-strain rotational compression of cylindrical billets. From the proposed velocity field, the upper-bound rolling force is determined by minimizing the total power consumption with respect to some chosen parameters. Experiments have been carried out with commercially pure lead at room temperature under the appropriate constrained conditions, the results of which are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of rolling force. It is shown thus that the velocity field proposed in this paper can be used conveniently for the prediction of the rolling force in the plane-strain rotational compression of cylindrical billets.
