This period was characterized by the efforts by such Buddhist masters and lay Buddhist scholars as Taixu, Liang Shuming, Xiong Shili, and Wang Xiaoxu to update Buddhist teaching by appropriating modern Western philosophy. This detailed survey offers in-depth analyses of how these modern Buddhists revitalized Buddhism by engaging in active discussions and dialogues with influences of idealism, materialism, and mind-matter dualism.
