Title: Practical examples of geotextile used in small earth dams
Abstract: This paper gives practical examples of geotextile used in earth dams less than 15 m in height. In each case the structure was designed bearing in mind ease of placement of the geotextile. Four types of geotextile use are discussed, three of which have been satisfactorily applied by the engineer for the works and the contractor. These are: -use of a double sheet comprising a filtering geotextile and an antipunching geotextile beneath rip-rap providing protection from wave action; -use of a geotextile as a filter for wrapping a vertical drain; -use of a geotextile, laid in one stage, as a filter for wrapping a sloping drain; and -use of a three-dimensional geotextile as a drain. An important point with respect to small dams is the fact that it is very easy to supervise geotextile placement.
