Title: A new method for the determination of paleointensity from the A.R.M. properties of rocks
Abstract: Anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) and thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) were given to samples containing various concentrations of magnetic, single-domain CrO2 powder at various temperatures. The results have been interpreted in conjunction with a modification of a thermodynamic theory of grain interaction proposed by W.F. Jaep. It is shown that the modified theory predicts the relation between ARM and TRM with an accuracy of ± 15%. This finding leads us to propose a new “ARM-method” of paleointensity determination in which data from ARM measurements are used to calculate the size of the d.c. field in which a certain TRM was acquired.
