Title: Interrelationship between Peroxidase, Polyphenol Oxidase Activities, and Phenolic Content of Wheat for Resistance to Loose Smut
Abstract: Peroxidase activity was found to be more in the resistant cv., CPAN 1333, as compared to that in the susceptible cv., Sonalika, of wheat. Polyphenol oxidase activity was different in the 2 cvs. but the pattern of changes was not comparable to that of peroxidase. More numbers of isoperoxidases were found in CPAN 1333 and it contained more amount of total phenols as compared to that of Sonalika. The results on preformed phenolic compounds and enzymes of polyphenol metabolism indicate that phenolic oxidation system may be involved in the resistance expression.
