Title: A bit of give and take: dual roles for ephrin receptors in axon guidance
Abstract: Plasma membrane receptors receive environmental signals and transduce them into the cell. This occurs through the tyrosine kinase activity intrinsic to many receptor types, the biggest class of which is represented by the Eph family. Eph receptors control axon guidance and tissue patterning and are activated by signals received from ephrin ligands. However, increasing evidence suggests that Eph kinases send signals to, as well as receive signals from, ephrins. Furthermore, it has been difficult to prove a formal requirement for kinase activity in the axon guidance functions of Eph receptors.
