Title: The phase lag of Earth tides and the braking of the Earth's rotation
Abstract: A discussion of tidal gravity measurements performed at 292 points world-wide gives, after correction for oceanic effects, a solid Earth tide phase lag of 0.38° in fair agreement with the phase lag 0.44° estimated by Schwiderski on the basis of the deceleration of the Moon along its orbit. This phase lag is attributed not to viscous properties of the Earth but to the pressure of oceanic tides on the tidally deformed bottom of the ocean.
