Abstract: Although Hess is generally credited with the concept of sea floor spreading in 1960, his work was anticipated by the Austrian geologist O. Ampferer for the Atlantic in 1941. First attempts in this direction were made by Ampferer (1925) and Holmes (1931). The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the work of the Austrian geologist Otto Ampferer.
