Abstract: The first Surgeon General's report on smoking and health was released in 1964.1 In 1972, Surgeon General Jesse Steinfeld first raised concerns about the potential health concerns regarding nonsmokers inhaling secondhand smoke.2 The first Surgeon General's report devoted to the topic of the health effects of involuntary smoking, commonly referred to as secondhand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke, was released in 1986.3 That document, which was one of the first major reports to investigate this topic, concluded that exposure to secondhand smoke caused lung cancer in healthy nonsmokers and respiratory health effects in children.
