Title: The role of endogenous opioids in the guinea pig dentate gyrus: A brief review
Abstract: Research in this lab has been focused on the role of the opioid neuropeptides in the regulation of synaptic transmission in the mammalian brain. We ask how specific opioid peptides function in the control of neuronal excitability in the rodent hippocampus by defining 1) the physiological conditions under which the peptides are released, 2) the postsynaptic cell types on which they act, 3) the specific receptors and signal-transduction mechanisms mediating their actions, and 4) the specific physiological consequences of their action on the functioning of the neural circuit. Electrophysiological, anatomical and neurochemical methods are used to define the pre- and postsynaptic features of the neuropeptide synapse
