Title: Are the kidneys involved in the removal of endogenous pyrogens in the rabbit?
Abstract: 1.To test the hypothesis that endogenous pyrogens are excreted intact in a biologically active form into the urine, rabbits were injected with endotoxin or with endogenous pyrogen and their urine was bioassayed for the presence of pyrogens. 2.Virtually no biologically active endogenous appeared in the urine of rabbits following a bolus injection of endotoxin or endogenous pyrogen. 3.To test the hypothesis that the kidneys might metabolize endogenous pyrogen, rabbits wrre bilaterally nephrectomized; their responses to injections of endogenous pyrogen were found to be smaller than those of sham-operated controls. 4.Defervescence is not dependent upon the presence of kidneys.
