Title: Variations in total hemocyte counts as induced by a nosemosis in the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni
Abstract: Abstract The freely circulating hemocytes in the larva of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni , were susceptible to infection with Nosema sp. A gradual decrease to a highly significant reduction in blood-cell numbers, accompanied by an increase of all developing stages of the infective organism in the cytoplasm of blood cells indicate that such cells are infected. Observations of fresh blood smears as well as stained smears indicate no hemocytic encapsulation and extracellular digestion of the invading pathogen. Phagocytosis was prevalent at advanced stages of infection, but this was not effective in warding off fatal infection. Intracellular digestion or retention of the pathogen was not observed.
