Abstract: He started his study as a geographer and gradually added the linguistic, historical, and cartographic fields to his range of interests.He was one ()f the pioneers of toponomy as a systematic science in Japan.He examined and classified the place-names listed on topographical maps (scale: 1: 50,000) all over Japan, and systematically described and interpreted the many types of place-names in Japan.He also did significant and perceptive field work, and established in Japan the methods of the reading place-names according to the topography and distribution of place-name types.He participated in the establishment of the' 'Society of Toponomic Research of Japan" in Kyoto organized by Mr. Fumihiko Nakano, and helped edit the "Toponomic Research" of the Society.He introduced many toponomic works of foreign countries into the Japanese learned world by contributing to the above-mentioned magazine and others.
