Title: Cromwell's Personality: The Problems and Promises of a Psychohistorical Approach
Abstract: Cromwell's personality remains elusive. Attempts to analyze it in Freudian or neo-Freudian terms have been hindered both by the nature of the evidence and by overly-rigid application of Freudian beliefs. Arguments that Cromwell was a hypomanic are more convincing but also have evidential problems. Despite the difficulties, some aspects of Cromwell's life, including his conversion experience, could be illuminated by a psychohistorical approach.
