Title: The use of empirical orthogonal functions in quasigeostrophic numerical prediction models
Abstract: An integrated quasi-geostrophic numerical prediction model is developed by using empirical orthogonal functions for the vertical representation. Friction is included in a simple way. Problems arising from the computations of the coefficients of the model are discussed using a linearized version of the corresponding 2-parameter (2 e.o.f.) model. Finally results from test integrations during an 8-day period are discussed in terms of root mean square errors and correlation coefficients.
