Title: Linking the University Campus with the Global Village in the 21st Century
Abstract: Abstract Through the synergy of teaching, research, and service, University of Alabama, like many other colleges and universities around the world, plans to enhance its outreach by carefully employing the latest technology in order to link its many academic programs to learners around the world—anyplace, anytime. Electronically-delivered degree programs, certificate programs, and just-in-time short courses are all expected to meet three criteria: (1) quality assurance, (2) faculty security, and (3) financial support that facilitates competitiveness in the global marketplace. The 21st century student, the new learner, will have lived his/her entire life in the world of sophisticated educational technology and will seek out the best learning opportunities available via virtual universities in the global community. Although there will always be traditional students who wish to learn on campus, the demand for higher education will shift substantially toward the global marketplace over the next several years. Those institutions that strategically plan for the changes will thrive in the new millennium. Those institutions that ignore the coming changes, may, as scholar Peter Drucker suggests, fail. University of Alabama is becoming an active participant in the global village of the 21st century.
