Title: DEFORMATION OF ALUMINIUM AT HIGH TEMPERATURES AND STRAIN RATES
Abstract: The steady-state flow stress, σ, of commercial purity aluminium was determined by extrusion over a range of temperatures, T, from 255–616 °C, and strain rates, [Formula: see text], between 0.1–10 sec −1 . The data are shown to fit the relationship[Formula: see text]where A, α, and n′ are constants. The activation energy, ΔH, for aluminium extrusion was determined to be 41.8 kcal/mole, a value somewhat higher than that of self-diffusion. The dislocation substructures produced during extrusion were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The equilibrium subgrain size was found to vary inversely with the logarithm of the Zener–Hollomon parameter, [Formula: see text], and with the extrusion flow stress.
