Title: Human side of design processes: challenge of learning
Abstract: The design processes of information technology and learning are of crucial importance in controlling the effects of technology. A Finnish follow-up study in banking and insurance branches in 1985–1987 revealed differences in the evaluation of training between occupational groups. The updating of skills to fulfill the new work requirements under time pressure demands mental energy, especially from older employees. Satisfaction with data systems has increased, but this positive attitude is often in conflict with the design practices and the ways in which systems are implemented at the workplace level. The process of change should be approached as a joint learning process in organizations. Possibilities should be given to the employees for analyzing their own work and for building sufficient mental models about the whole work process, not only about technical systems.
