Title: Comparison between sinusoidal PWM and Space Vector Modulation Techniques for NPC inverters
Abstract: The supported voltages by new high power IGBTs can reach 6.5 kV; so these devices are particularly suited for railways traction drives inverters. To this aim, however, it is still convenient to employ a neutral point clamped (NPC) structure based on 3.3 kV IGBTs. The paper analyzes and compares two different kinds of modulation techniques, specifically designed for three-phase NPC inverters. The techniques are derived by the Sinusoidal PWM and space vector modulation techniques used in classical two level industrial inverters. The simulation results are validated by experimental ones obtained employing a NPC inverter prototype and a control board, based on a TI TMS320F2407 microcontroller.
