Abstract: It is shown that the auroral zone is not the central region of auroral activity in the early evening sector. Intense evening auroral activity, characterized by westward traveling surges, occurs along the auroral oval which is almost out of the field of view of typical auroral zone stations, like College and Macquarie Island.
