Title: Individual differences in pure-tone localization
Abstract: The range of abilities of 85 subjects in localizing a 1-kHz pure tone in the horizontal plane is examined. Findings show that there is considerable variability in performance (?=47%, s=13), and that one subject performed at a markedly superior level (85% correct) to other subjects. It is suggested that the duplicity theory of pure-tone localization is inadequate to explain this superior performance, and other possible explanations are discussed. Subject Classification: [43]65.62.
