Title: The sizes and distribution of ganglion cells in the retina of the owl monkey, aotus trivirgatus
Abstract: The sizes and distribution of ganglion cells in the retina of the owl monkey were determined from whole-mount preparations stained with cresyl violet. A central area was densely packed with small to medium-sized ganglion cells which decreased rapidly in density in all directions from a peak of over 100/0.01 mm2 to as low as 3 or less/0.01 mm2 in the extreme periphery of the retina. Large ganglion cells were absent from the central retina, and were sparsely distributed over the rest of the retina. Isodensity contours of the distribution of ganglion cells were roughly concentric, with slight horizontal and vertical elongations outside the central retina.
