Title: Direct design of reinforced concrete skew slabs
Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental and theoretical analysis of the behaviour of reinforced skew slabs designed by the Direct Design Procedure. The method adopted satisfies the fundamental concepts of classical plasticity leading in practice to the lower bound on the collapse load. The method also ensure considerable reduction on the ductility demands leading to good serviceability behaviour. The method is particularly suitable for the design of slabs using the computer aided design concepts. Five ‘large scale’ slabs were tested. The main parameters were the angle of skew and the reinforcement layout. The theoretical analysis was done using a nonlinear plate bending program based on the layer model for reinforced concrete slabs. The results indicate that the method can be successfully used in practice.
