Title: Comments on a miscellaneous ostracod group from the mid-Cretaceous of the south shelf of the tethys sea
Abstract: The ostracoda here considered, have so far only been encountered in Mid-Cretaceous (Albian-Cenomanian deposits along the southern border of the Tethys sea. The main unifying morphological feature of these rather common and geographically fairly widespread forms (Algeria-Iran), is the lateral ornament of the carapace. Features such as size and shape are highly variable. Distinct subgroups with respect to size and shape, sometimes related to a specific region (e.g. Algeria-Tunisia), have here been interpreted as differentiated species (e.g. “Veeniacythereis” subrectangulata sp. nov.). However, other patterns are also present which seem to lessen the possibility of discovering the true relationships between the various forms. Apart from poorly documented internal features, this is mainly due to the well known susceptibility of ostracods to environmental agencies (e.g. temperature, salinity, water-chemistry, depth, etc.), i.e. elements which may produce great variation in an unstable environment. Moreover, the substrate may play an important role as far as architectural and functional aspects of the carapace are concerned.
