Abstract: Fourteen insomniac university students received either relaxation training or placebo therapy. Following a two week baseline self-observation period, subjects underwent six one-half hour sessions of either group relaxation or group placebo treatment. Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in their sleep patterns but the relaxation group demonstrated significantly greater improvement than the placebo therapy group. Relaxation can be an effective treatment method for insomnia but expectation and demand characteristics are contributing factors.
