Abstract: Of more than 50 million individuals affected by glaucoma, recent prevalence data have suggested that at least one-third have angle closure glaucoma. Many of these individuals are Chinese. Moreover, an individual with angle closure glaucoma is bilaterally blind more than twice as frequently as an individual with open-angle glaucoma. Hence, the total of blind individuals with angle closure glaucoma is estimated to be higher than that with open-angle glaucoma. Clearly, this is a major public health issue that needs to be addressed during the next decade.
