Title: Source equivalency based on the energy specification of order l
Abstract: It is shown that the multipole expansion of electrostatic energy can be expressed in the form of energy specification S{We} =〈[P]l,∇(l)φ〉, where ∇(l) is a differential operator, whereas φ and [P]l represent an arbitrary test potential and equivalent reduced volume multipole density, respectively. Two electrostatic sources are l-equivalent if their energy specifications are identical. The formalism by means of which electrostatic multipole sources can be effectively handled is developed.
