Title: Oxidation of residual petroleum asphalt in a benzene solution in an acidic medium
Abstract: OXIDATION of freshly dlstdled residual petroleum asphalt by atmospheric oxygen to obtain bitumens has been studied fairly well [1] Bitumen is produced m apparatuses of different design by dispersing air m th.e asphalt On account of the occurrence of a number of concurrent sequentml reactmns, the asphalt components are transformed during such oxldatmn as indicated ods~reslns~asphaitenes The depth of these transformanons determines the quahty of the bitumen By oxidizing residual petroleum asphalt m a benzene solution m an acidic medmm at elevated pressure and temperature, we succeeded m intensifying transformanon of the asphalt into bitumen and m increasing the depth of oxidation As a result of this, a prewously unknown powder product with oxygen-contammg functional groups was obtained [2] This product contains a large number of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups both m a free and in a fixed state m the form of ester groups, we have called it carbogemc hydroxy acids In all their quahtatlve indices, the carbogenlc hydroxy acids dtffer from carbenes, carbolds, asphaltogemc acids, and thetr anhydrides The present work describes the oxidation of freshly d~stllled residual petroleum asphalt by atmospheric oxygen in a benzene solutmn to carbogenlc hydroxy acids.
