Title: On the Road to Theorizing Practice in the Social Foundations
Abstract: Abstract This essay attempts to shed light on key influences on the process of becoming a social foundations educator, focusing on the problem of how to conceptualize the work and aims of a social foundations practice. A suggested solution to this problem lies in the concept of "theorizing practice." The essay briefly elaborates this concept, and its potential role in the practice of social foundations educators, and that of their students. Notes 1 For an extended discussion of the concept, with criticisms and responses, see the 1988 issue of Educational Theory 37(4). 2 Note that the source of normativity here lies in the basic idea of warranted belief and practice, utilizing both empirical and philosophical sources of justification. This is somewhat different from Fenstermacher's use of practical argument, in which normativity comes from within what he calls "normative theories of education," which he contrasts with empirical sources of justification.
