Title: Effect of Electrical Stimulation of the Hypothalamus on Thyroid Function
Abstract: Various sites in the hypothalamus and adjacent areas were electrically stimulated in dogs, and the effect on the level of PBI131 in the thyroid venous blood observed. A significant increase in thyroidal PBI131 secretion was seen after stimulating the anterior hypothalamus or the median eminence of normal dogs, but no change was noted after stimulating the lateral hypothalamus or the posterior hypothalamus. Stimulation outside the hypothalamus also failed to result in a significant increase. No increase was observed after stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus or median eminence in dogs whose pituitaries had been autotransplanted under the fascia of the back. Thyroidal response to stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus or median eminence therefore appears to be mediated by increased TSH secretion.
