Analysis of these nuclides in environmental media provides needed information with respect to their critical pathways and the calculation of radiation exposure to the population. The low levels of radionuclides in aqueous media can be determined by processing large sample volumes through a multisection column of cation- and anion-exchange resins. The column concentrates these radionuclides from 200 l., of water having as much as 250 ppm hardness, or from larger volumes of softer water. The column dimensions were designed on the basis of tracer studies with 137Cs, 85Sr, 60Co and 131I to assure almost complete retention of these nuclides in the uppermost section of the cation- or anion-exchange resins. The nuclides that emit gamma rays are identified by spectrometer, and all radionuclides are determined radiochemically after eluting them from the sections with 6 N HCl.Read More
