Title: The effects of road transportation on peripheral blood lymphocyte subpopulations, lymphocyte blastogenesis and neutrophil function in calves
Abstract: Four castrated Holstein calves, four to six months old, were transported by road for 4 h. Blood samples collected before and after the transportation were examined for total and differential leucocyte counts, lymphocyte subpopulations, lymphocyte blastogenesis, Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) reduction activity of neutrophils, and for plasma cortisol concentrations. The animals showed a leucocytosis with neutrophilia, a decrease of T-lymphocyte population, a suppression of lymphocyte blastogenesis and an enhancement of NBT reduction activity of neutrophils after the transportation. These alterations corresponded with a cortisol elevation.
