Title: Broadening an Understanding of the Phenomenon of Dissonance
Abstract: The aim of this study is to broaden our understanding of the phenomenon of dissonance. This study tries to take into account problems related to researching dissonance by applying qualitative research methods and by carefully considering the criteria according to which coherence or dissonance of responses are diagnosed. The present study concentrates on examining dissonance in a discipline-specific context, more precisely among law students. The participants of this study were 110 law students who completed the Reflections on Learning Inventory. Of these, 64 students gave oral or written comments on their inventory results. The results showed that there were very clear differences among study orchestrations of law students in terms of coherence and dissonance, and the orchestrations varied from clearly coherent to clearly dissonant. The results further showed that there were different kinds of dissonant orchestrations, or, more precisely, clearly and slightly dissonant as well as unclear orchestrations.
